Types of Breast Cancer
Cancer is categorized into different types, on the basis of the area of growth, signs, symptoms, etc. Read on to learn about the various types of breast cancer:
Ductal Carcinoma in Situ- DCIS is the most initial type of breast cancer. In DCSI, the growth of the cancerous cells are restricted to the ducts of the breast and has not yet spread into the adjoining breast tissues. DCIS can be detected through mammography.
Lobular Carcinoma in Situ – LCIS is not exactly breast cancer. In LCIS, the breast cells lining the lobes start to change, which in turn increases the risk of developing breast cancer in future to some extent. Though most women with LCIS never develop cancer. But women with LCIS have to get their breast screening and mammograms done on regular basis.
Invasive Breast Cancer- Majority of breast cancers are invasive in nature, which means that the cancerous cells have past the area outside the lining of the ducts to the adjoining breast tissue.
Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer- Around 80% of all invasive breast cancers are of this type.
Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer- Approx. 1 out of 10 cases of invasive breast cancer are lobular. It is little complicated to diagnose it through mammography. Doctors rely on tests to decide which treatment is best suited for the patient. The cancer cells are examined and the on that basis the treatment is prescribed.
Inflammatory Breast Cancer- In this type of cancer the cancer cells grow so as to block the lymph vessels in the breast skin. This makes the breast inflamed and swollen.
Paget’s Disease of The Breast- This involves rashes and redness on the nipple and the skin around it. Most women with this disease may have DCIS or invasive breast cancer.
